Le musée Den Frie Udstillingbygning, abrégé aujourd’hui en Den Frie fut fondé en 1891 sur le modèle français du Salon des Refusés. En 1895, le musée organisa pour la première fois en Europe une exposition entièrement féminine pour montrer au monde les progrès que la condition féminine avait fait dans la société et le monde artistique en particulier. Toute l’avant-garde scandinave exposa au Den Frie dont bien sûr, Edvard Munch. Selon le site du Den Frie : “the world’s first international surrealist exhibition took place at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in 1935. The exhibition Kubisme=Surrealisme presented artworks by Jean Arp, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, Man Ray, Meret Oppenheim, Yves Tanguy and the Halmstad-group.”
